Study Shows Common Reasons for Divorce

Div20

Like all other states in the country, couples wanting to end their marriage in Pennsylvania can file on the basis of no-fault. A no-fault divorce does not mean that the two spouses are completely amicable or not in conflict. It simply means that neither formally blames the other for the breakdown of the marriage. Still, a study conducted by the Forbes Advisor Survey has shown some of the most common reasons for divorce. Below, our Lehighton family law attorney explains what they are.

Irreconcilable Differences

When couples get a no-fault divorce, they cite irreconcilable differences. This means the marital relationship had broken down and there was no chance of reconciliation. While this is the most common reason given for divorce, the Forbes survey showed that only five percent of couples actually believed that they could not reconcile. These individuals believed that if their spouse had changed certain aspects of their behavior, it could have saved the marriage.

Lack of Family Support

While irreconcilable differences may be the most legal and formal reason for divorce, couples participating in the survey stated that a lack of family support was actually the biggest factor in their divorce. In fact, 43 percent of people reported that this was the reason for their marriage ending.

A lack of family support means one or both spouses did not receive practical, financial, or emotional support from their extended families. This can affect the longevity and stability of marriages. Financial issues are already one of the most common reasons for divorce and not having support from family in this sense can increase that tension. Financial factors were the sixth-most common factor for divorce, according to 24 percent of the survey participants.

When parents of children do not have family support, they may not have additional help, such as childcare, which can result in additional parenting stress. A lack of family support was particularly common among couples who had been married between two to eight years.

Infidelity

Infidelity was the second-most cited factor for ending a marriage. Of all study participants, 34 percent cited an extramarital affair as the reason for the breakdown of the marriage. Still, many of these couples have filed for a no-fault divorce due to the fact that this type of divorce can be easier and there is no burden of proof to prove allegations made in a divorce complaint. When filing on the grounds of adultery, the person filing must prove that there was an extramarital affair.
